Ten

A handmade original linocut print by printmaker and artist Lisa Benson.

Ten was originally created for the Great Print 10 Exhibition at Rheged in Cumbria. Exhibiting printmakers were invited to use the number ten as a prompt for a print in celebration of ten years of this fantastic print based show. For me the Roman numeral X creates a pleasing symmetry. It is a strong symbol that draws in from each corner to meet in the middle, it’s no wonder it’s been an album title amongst other things. Here I have paired it with Ivy because I like the symbolism that Ivy adds, strength and immortality being a couple of my favourites (Print is not dead!) and a decade is a good enough chunk of time in my eyes that it deserves it’s recognition in relation to our lifespans.

Limited edition of 10 prints, it had to be ten prints!

Print size approx 10.5 x 10.5cm (coloured area 10 x 10cm to fit with the brief with a black border)

Paper size approx 18 x 18.5cm

Ten is a multiblock linocut with jigsaw elements. I hand carve each block based on my original sketch and then each block is inked by hand using a roller and printed on top of each other to build up the print. The texture on the X is created by initially printing the base colour, cream, and then inking the X up in the darker colour and putting it through the press with some textured paper on top of it. The texture leaves marks in the ink so when the X is printed with the ivy that has been inked in green the texture on the X transfers onto the first colour giving the X the textured and aged look.

The inks used for this print are Schmincke Aqua inks which are rated as highly lightfast.

The paper is Fabriano Unica 250gsm printmaking paper.

Although all care is taken to represent the prints as well as possible in the photographs, colours may appear slightly differently on screen to the actual print.

Delivery

The print is wrapped in acid free tissue paper before going into either a sturdy 75mm postal tube or being sandwiched between sheets of card and posted out to you. Delivery is in the UK only via my website. Apologies but delivery is currently unavailable to BT postcodes and the EU.

Handmade Prints

These prints are all handmade and as such there can be slight variations in the prints in an edition, though these are very slight. It means that each print in an edition is unique and is an original in it’s own right.

Varied Editions (VE)

Prints that are marked VE by the edition number are part of a varied edition. This means there are enough difference between the prints that they are sold by their individual number.

Please bear in mind that although I take every care to photograph the prints as faithfully as possible there can also be variations in colour between what you view on a screen and the original print.

Delivery

At the current time only UK postage inside the UK is available due to changes in the overseas postal services.
